Why Do You Tri? - Kathy Francis

Why do I Tri?
It was something I always wanted to do, but never had the knowledge or support I needed to train or complete one.

Approximately 3 years ago, I had a heart attack at age 49. I smoked, was over weight and had a very stressful job. It was time for things to change. I quit smoking, retired from my job and committed to a new and healthy lifestyle. I began working out with a personal trainer. When I told him a triathlon was something I wanted to work toward, he was very supportive and we started a training regime to help me complete this goal. It took a year for me to get into shape to even start training for a sprint triathlon.

In the summer of 2011, I overcame my fear of open water swimming and now I could register for my first tri. I completed my first sprint triathlon in July 2011. Loved it so much I did three more. I also competed in a 1.2 mile open water swim on Labor day, and finished first in my age group.

Since I started my healthy lifestyle, I have lost 60 pounds, I am at a healthy body fat level, I no longer take a heart medication that I was told I would be on my entire life, I no longer take blood pressure medication and my cholesterol and triglycerides are under control. Not only are my doctors, my trainer, my family and friends proud of me, I am proud of myself.
