Change of Venue!!
We recently were advised that Bridge St. in Carleton Place is scheduled for construction prior to the event, so it will be unavailable to us this year. As a result, we have moved to a new event site. The new site is still in downtown Carleton Place but at Victoria Park, which is on the opposite side of the river from the Carleton Place Canoe Club. We think you will like the new venue which may become permanent, and we will provide more information re: parking and access to the park in our Newsletter # 2 next week.
Revised Swim, Cycle, and Run Courses
The new venue means there will be some changes to the courses. New maps will also be available by mid-week next week. However, here is a sneak peek at the changes we think will be in place by next week.
- Swim Course - The new venue has a friendly beach entry and exit. The water at this site is deeper in mid-river, so we anticipate an open water start. All races will follow a course up river (with very little currentJ) and back to the beach. The course will have the same basic configuration as the old course does in terms of the layout and number of laps.
- Cycle Course - The cycle course will be virtually unchanged with the exception of the route through Town. Instead of using Bridge St., cyclists will leave the T-Zone and travel via Thomas St. rather than Bridge St. Other than that change the course is identical to the past and the map on the event site.
- Run Course - The run course will undergo the most change and we are still working on it. However, half of the original course will be incorporated into it along High St. and it will remain a 5Km loop course that will come back to the event site after each 5Km. And it will still be flat J
A Good Idea
It is a good idea to read the event literature at
Charity of the Event
You may choose to make donations or collect pledges on behalf of the Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital Foundation - or make a donation while you are registering online. If you wish to collect pledges you can go to the event web site and download a pledge form. Thanks for considering support of the Foundation.
Supporters and Sponsors
We wish to thank the many sponsors who are contributing to the 2010 Ottawa Riverkeeper and associated races. This list includes, but is not limited to:
Town of Carleton Place, Lanark County, Bagel Bagel, Beacon Lite, CycleLogik, CHIMO Hotel, ZoomPhoto.ca, iRun Magazine, Ottawa Outdoors Magazine, Get Out There Magazine, Imperial Barber Shop, Primus Business Services, EuroTriShop.ca, Ballygiblin Restaurant, Brockville Kayakers, Canadian Ski Patrol, Somersault Motorcycle Patrol Group, Udderly Smoot, Taste of Nature,
Clubs of the Event
We are pleased to announce that the Carleton Place Chamber of Commerce, and Search and Rescue Global 1, are our "Clubs of the Event". They are each supplying many workers to the event in return for a significant donation from the event, to further their community service work.
Cycling Protocol and Safety
The cycle course is open to both cyclists and motor vehicles, so cyclists must exercise caution and follow the rules of the road, except when authorized to do differently by event marshals or police officers. The Somersault Motorcycle Patrol Group will be on the course enforcing race and safety rules.
Cyclists must ride on the far right hand side of the road. You should only venture out from the edge of the road, when you are passing, which you should do quickly when it is safe to do so, and then return immediately to the right side of the road. Please do not use your aero bars when cycling through the downtown streets!
All normal rules of triathlon cycling apply at Somersault races (http://www.somersault.ca/rulestri.htm ). Crossing the centre line almost always results in an automatic disqualification.
Coaches and Clubs Links
We recommend that inexperienced participants and newcomers consult with friends who are more experienced, or contact one of the many coaches, clubs, or trainers, who are listed in the Clubs and Coaches section on our website, at http://www.somersault.ca/clubsandcoaches.htm .
Cheers!
