Hybrid Bikes and Off-Road Triathlons

I am a seasoned triathlete endurance athlete and I signed up for an off road tri for the fun of it and the workout. I do not own a mountain bike yet, but do have a hybrid. I do not have clipless pedels on the hybrid because I ride it around and get off and stuff like that. I was wondering if there is anything I should know before venturing out into the wild. I am fine with the swim and run, but a little apprehensive about the hybrid bike. should I purchase wider tires, or just ride as is?

Hi Mary.
Thank you for contacting TriathaNewbie.com!

Off-road triathlons are a lot of fun! We decided to give you advice based on cost.

  1. If you are a seasoned triathlete and plan on doing a bunch of off-road triathlons, we encourage you to buy a mountain bike. The frame is thicker, the tires are wider and you can either get toe clips or baskets for your pedals. Both will keep you fastened tight but still allow you to pull out in case of an emergency. If you're nervous about the clips, the baskets are a cheaper solution.
  2. That said, people do throw wider tires on non-mountain bikes if this is their first off-road tri. It's a pretty cost-effective solution.
  3. Or, if you think your hybrid bike can handle the conditions, go for it! Just be sure you pack an extra tube and c02 cartridge with you for just in case.

You can always take a ride down to your local bike shop (go small business) and talk to them about the terrain and the bike you're using. They may have some ideas too.

Be well.
~Jack
